A man has been found guilty of murdering missing Blackpool teenager Paige Chivers.

The body of the 15-year-old, who was reported missing in August 2007, has never been found.

Robert Ewing, 60, denied murder but was convicted of killing her by a jury at Preston Crown Court.

Co-defendant Gareth Dewhurst, 46, of Duncan Avenue, Bispham was cleared of a serious sexual offence but convicted of helping dispose of Paige’s body.

‘Inappropriate interest’

Ewing of Kincraig Place, Bispham, was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice by intimidating witnesses and laying false trails.

This included an anonymous phone call to police about a “problem child” he said had turned up on his doorstep.

He had an “inappropriate sexual interest” in the teenager and took advantage of her chaotic upbringing, the court was told.

Vital days were lost in the search for Paige due to her age being wrongly logged by police as 45 instead of 15.

They did not investigate for 12 days as they had recorded her year of birth as 1962.

Her age was not corrected until 7 September 2007 when police started their inquiries into her disappearance.

Lancashire Police accepted the error and voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Blood spots matching Paige’s DNA were found at the flat Ewing lived at the time, on All Hallows Road, Bispham, Blackpool.

Ewing claimed they came from a cut on Paige’s arm which he had treated.

However, no other blood was found at the flat and a piece of carpet had been removed from the flat shortly after the teenager’s disappearance.

Ewing claimed he replaced it because his cat had urinated on it.

Ewing also made entries in his diary which the prosecution said related to sexual acts with Paige.

After the verdicts were returned, her brother said in a statement: “Paige was a fun loving kid, she was bright and funny. She was only a child when our mum passed away in 2007. It was so hard on us all at the time and I would go as far as to say it broke us.”

He described Paige as “bonny” and “outgoing” and said they thought that she was “just out with mates” when she disappeared.

But “days turned into weeks, weeks into months and months into years.”

He added: “We used to go out in the car looking for Paige and sometimes do a ‘double take’ when we saw some girls and anyone similar to her. We would drive around the block and check again, raising our hopes only to be let down again, you never stop looking.

“I’m concerned that I will never know what her last words were, if she was in any pain or even if I will find out what actually went on the days she went missing.

“I hope and pray that the people responsible tell us where she is so we can lay her to rest. This will at least give us some closure and maybe stop any nightmares, images and worry about where she is.”

A neo-Nazi paedophile has been found guilty of murdering a school girl who vanished eight years ago.

Paige Chivers, 15, disappeared in Blackpool in 2007 following a row with her father. Her body has never been discovered.

Robert Ewing, 60, murdered the schoolgirl after developing an “inappropriate sexual interest” in her, Preston Court heard.

Ewing was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice by intimidating witnesses and providing false information to the police.

Fellow defendant Gareth Dewhurst, 46, was found guilty of perverting the course of justice and helping Ewing dispose of Paige’s body. He was cleared of the charge that he had had sex with her dead body after Ewing killed her.

Paige, who was described as “very troubled and vulnerable” packed two carrier bags with clothes and set off from the family home following the fight with her father. Later that day she was seen at a bus stop talking to an older man, believed to be Ewing.

Forensics found bloodstains containing blood from Ewing and Paige inside Ewing’s flat in 2007. However, he was not charged until last year.

The jury heard that Dewhurst had confessed to a 16-year-old boy whilst he was “heavily stoned” his involvement in the girl’s disappearance. He told the boy that Ewing had killed Paige and then made him have sex with her dead body before forcing him to use his car to dispose of her remains.

The court heard that a fortnight before Paige went missing, Ewing contacted the police with an anonymous tip that a “problem child” had turned up on his doorstep after being evicted by her father. Prosecutors said this was a calculated move to “test the water” and gauge police response. There had been “very little reaction” by officials.

In recordings made by the police, Ewing described himself as a “neo-Nazi”.

Det Supt Andy Webster, who led the investigation, told the Blackpool Gazette: “Paige Chivers was a vulnerable 15-year-old child who disappeared in August 2007.

“The court heard how Robert Ewing carefully groomed Paige before murdering her at his flat in Bispham, Blackpool.

“The prosecution case has been largely circumstantial as Paige’s body has never been recovered. A fundamental part of the prosecution case was that Paige was last seen alive with Robert Ewing, alone in his flat at teatime on Friday August 24, 2007.

“After this point there were no other corroborated sightings of her. Her blood was later found in his flat.

“When she was reported missing he failed to assist the police and then repeatedly lied to them. He has repeatedly sought to implicate other vulnerable people in her murder.

“The jury accepted that his co-accused, Gareth Dewhurst, disposed of Paige’s body and then sought to intimidate and harass witnesses. This included a family to whom he had confessed and who he subsequently sought to terrify.”

Speaking after the sentencing, Paige’s brother-in-law Robert McClelland said that “not a day goes past” when the family does not think about her.

He described Paige as a “bright and funny” girl, adding: “We all have holes in our hearts that can never be replaced.”

The court heard that a police error was made when Paige was reported missing by her father on 26 August, three days after her disappearance. He clearly stated that his daughter was a fifteen year old girl, but her date of birth was wrongly entered as 1962 instead of 1992. This meant that police thought they were investigating the disappearance of a 45 year old woman who had moved away voluntarily, rather than a child missing from home. The error was not corrected until 7 September.

The handling of the case is now being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Ewing and Dewhurst will both be sentenced on 28 July.

Former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson has been recalled to prison, the Luton News can reveal.

Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was jailed for 18 months in January 2014 after pleading guilty to a charge of mortgage fraud

He was released on licence, which is due to end on July 22, but has now been recalled to HMP Peterborough.

A statement on the Luton man’s Facebook page indicated that it is not yet known how long the 32-year-old will be held.

It added: “His licence ends next week but they could add a charge on for breaching his terms.”

In November Mr Yaxley-Lennon addressed the Oxford Union, a month after first planned as he was recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his licence.

During the Oxford address the former EDL leader told students that the licence prevented him from speaking about certain topics, adding: “I regain my freedom of speech on July 22 2015, I would be happy to come back and speak to you freely then”.

Later on Twitter he said that he would “tell all about police blackmail persecution and bribery” once his licence expires.

The Ministry of Justice has said that it will not comment on Mr Yaxley-Lennon.

A spokesperson added: “Offenders on Home Detention Curfew must comply with the conditions of their curfew or release licence. If they fail to do so, they can be immediately recalled to custody.”

Two brothers who dubbed themselves “The Paedophile Squad” have been jailed for trying to extort £1,000 from a convicted child sex offender they snared through Grindr.

Ryan Jones, 27, and Elliot Jones, 24, both of Ascension Road, Romford, targeted a man in his 50s on the dating app.

They convinced him to meet up with a 14-year-old boy in Collier Row in April last year. When he turned up, they announced they were “The Paedophile Squad” and demanded £1,000.

After taking him to a bank, the man flagged down a police car and all three were arrested.

A jury at the Old Bailey convicted the brothers of blackmail today and sentenced them both to two-and-a-half years in jail.

After the verdict, it was revealed Elliot Jones was himself convicted last month of trying to incite a child into sexual activity in October 2013.

Judge Charles Wide said the prosecution hadn’t been told about the conviction until the trial had begun – too late for it to be used as evidence.

He ordered an investigation into the handling of the case, having also been told one of the brothers allegedly asked the man to drop the charges – information police failed to follow up on.

Sentencing them, he said: “You deliberately targeted someone pretty much at random using Grindr, who you knew would be vulnerable.”

The judge attacked Elliot Jones for an “utterly bogus” defence, having hidden from the jury he had been convicted of a child sex offence himself.

It also emerged Elliot Jones served a three and a half year sentence for a racist attack on a mosque in Ilford in 2011.

The man in his 50s admitted attempting to groom a 14-year-old over the incident and will be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court later this month.

A man and a woman exploited a seven-year-old girl and involved her in pornography worldwide.

Michael Kinnear and Caroline Shaw took obscene pictures of the little girl and distributed them a court was told.

Kinnear, 48, who gave his last known address as Fairfield Avenue, Blackpool, and Caroline Shaw, 29, formerly of Thornton Road, Morecambe, now living in Meldon Road, Morecambe, pleaded guilty to inciting a seven-year-old girl to be involved in pornography worldwide.

They also admitted offences of possessing and distributing indecent pictures, some at the highest level of indecency, of children.

Shaw further pleaded guilty to taking an indecent picture of a child and ill-treating a child.

All the offences took place at Morecambe between October last year and May this year.

Prosecutor Malcolm Isherwood said: “The case involves the taking and making of indecent images of children.

“They exploited a seven-year-old child, photographs were taken of her and distributed.”

The prosecution opposed bail for Kinnear.

The defendants were ordered to appear for sentence at Preston Crown Court on August 12 by Blackpool magistrates.

Kinnear was remanded in custody and Shaw was bailed.

A HUSBAND and wife are waking up behind bars after luring a Blackpool girl and keeping her in their home, where the man sexually abused her.

Michael Kinnear, 41, and Nicola Kinnear, 40, admitted detaining the 13-year-old in their terraced house on Fairfield Road in North Shore.

After being lured into the couple’s home with the promise of shelter and food, the youngster, who was in foster care, was sexually touched by Michael Kinnear.

Grooming

A judge at Preston Crown Court described their actions as “classic grooming” and said they should have informed the authorities of her whereabouts.

Police began the hunt for the 13-year-old girl in April last year after her concerned Blackpool foster parents reported her missing.

The youngster was found six days later in Kinnear’s house.

Officers had already called at the house and been told she was not there.

DC Andy Rigby, from Blackpool Police and Blackpool Council’s Awaken Team, a project to tackle the exploitation of vulnerable children, said: “This young girl who was in foster care wasn’t happy with her placement and got introduced to these two through a mutual teenage friend.

“She was there for six days and they didn’t contact anybody, hence the child abduction. While there, Michael Kinnear has committed sexual activity with her.

“The judge described it as classic grooming – they gave her free reign and no rules, they fed and clothed her during the week.”

Police were able to track the teenager’s whereabouts after tracing a mobile phone she had used to call a missing person’s helpline to the Kinnears’ address.

DC Rigby added: “We visited their address, while knocking on doors, and they had denied all knowledge of anything. Then we traced the mobile phone to that address and when we went round again, they still denied it. “Eventually they said ‘she’s here’.

“She saw them in the first instance as a place of shelter, but clearly they had other ideas, hence the sentences.

“She wasn’t locked in the house, they just allowed her to stay there. It’s very important a message is sent out to children – nobody does anything for nothing. You have to take a step back and think ‘what is the ulterior motive’.”

The teenager has now left Blackpool and police say she has settled back into care and is “putting it behind her”.

Michael Kinnear was sentenced to 33 months in prison after pleading guilty to detaining a child so as to keep her from a person having lawful control and engaging in sexual activity with a child.

Nicola Kinnear was handed a 16-month jail term for detaining a child.

DC Rigby added: “This has been a complex and difficult investigation but I am pleased with the sentence.”

The couple did not plead guilty to the offences until the trial began. Michael Kinnear was placed on the sex offenders register for seven years and given a 10-year Sex Offenders Prevention Order.

A man who broke his cousin’s nose by head-butting him at a family party has been jailed for 14 months.

Gerald McCullion, 33, of St Helier’s Road, South Shore, Blackpool, was also accused of biting off a large chunk of an uncle’s ear at the same party but was cleared at an earlier hearing.

McCullion’s cousin was celebrating his 21st birthday party at an address on Duke Street, Blackpool, last December when violence flared.

Not only was his cousin left with a broken nose, McCullion also assaulted another man by barging into him as he stormed out.

The defendant admitted offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and also common assault.

A sentencing hearing at Preston Crown Court heard how he had been estranged from members of his family, but went along to the birthday party after it carried on from a pub.

When a row broke out between him and a relative, his cousin tried to act as a peacemaker but was attacked.

Rachel Woods, defending, told the hearing McCullion believed others had been acting aggressively towards him.

He claimed he had resorted to head-butting his cousin in order to get away from him.

But jailing him for 14 months, Judge Robert Altham told him he had effectively used his head as a weapon.

He said: “His intention was to try and persuade you the rest of the family had not set their face against you.

“He was trying to make peace between you and the rest of the family.

“Maybe he took hold of you, but your response was wholly unacceptable.”

Several weeks ago, McCullion was cleared of attacking his uncle by biting off part of his ear and causing a fractured jaw.

He told a jury he had not been involved and claimed he could not have done it because he was missing his upper front teeth.

Detectives said a police officer, who was “in the right place at the right time”, rushed the victim to hospital himself because of the severity of the injuries.

Baker, 20, formerly of South Park Drive, Marton, was found guilty of wounding and jailed by a judge at Preston Crown Court for the attack, which took place in December.

Det Con Emma Shuttleworth, of Blackpool CID, told said after the hearing: “The victim has got life-changing injuries that have affected his job and the way he presents himself.

“The attack slit his eye and left him blind in that eye.

“The victim is a really nice lad who was not out looking for trouble.

“This attack has changed his life, the poor lad. He didn’t deserve that.”

She said the victim was with friends at a house party, on Kenilworth Avenue, on the evening of December 6.

“They are a bunch of really nice kids,” she added. “They were having a house party for a friend who was moving away from the area.”

Baker was among a number of uninvited guests who turned up to the house late in the evening.

The attack is believed to have taken place either late on December 6 or in the early hours of the following day.

Det Con Shuttleworth said: “Without any provocation or any reason whatsoever, he approached the victim, who was outside the address, and smashed him in the face with a Bacardi bottle.

“A police officer driving down the street saw the commotion and arrested the suspect.

“It was a case of being in the right place at the right time – it could have escalated into something far worse.”

She said the injuries were so serious that the officer took the victim straight to hospital himself, rather than wait for an ambulance to arrive.

She praised the victim and other involved in helping bring Baker to justice, saying they had all been “really accommodating” of the legal process.

Baker was given a 12-year sentence – nine years in prison followed by three years on licence – at a hearing on Monday after being found guilty of wounding.

A man who went into his local Sainsbury’s supermarket and stuck stickers on packets of meat that read “beware halal is barbaric and funds terrorism” has been given a month-long curfew.

Liam Gary Edwards, 29, today pleaded guilty to racially aggravated criminal damage on the day of his trial but insisted that he was protesting against the halal slaughter of animals after watching a television documentary.

The self-proclaimed “animal lover” stuck nine stickers with the hashtag #banhalal on halal poultry products after obtaining the stickers over the internet.

At an earlier hearing held at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court, the van driver pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis after police found the Class B during a search of his home in Chancel Avenue, Ordsall, following the incident.

Today the same court was told that CCTV captured Edwards going into the supermarket on Regent Road, Salford, on February 20 with his girlfriend and two young children.

Later staff at the store became aware of the stickers on various packets of chicken breasts, thighs and a whole chicken worth £16.50 which could no longer be sold due to concerns for contamination.

Upon searching the hashtag term on Twitter, staff found images of the stickers on trollies and point of sale displays.

For the prosecution, Miss Lisa Connor said that upon his arrest Edwards apologised to officers.

She said: “He accepted he had been in possession of the stickers and placed them on various items. He got involved in a Twitter conversation about halal and maintains that his whole motivation was his concern for the way in which halal meat is obtained and what happens in abattoirs.”

She added that he had never disputed the offence and accepted the prosecution’s case

“He maintained he wasn’t motivated by any racial prejudice he just wanted to highlight the cruelty involved. He admitted he was sorry for his actions.”

The court heard that he had no similar matters on his record.

For Edwards, Mr Lee Hammond said that after watching a documentary on how livestock were dealt with in slaughterhouses he had taken to Twitter.

There he came across others who shared views of what they perceived to be “unfavourable methods” and one sent him the stickers.

Mr Hammond said: “Unfortunately the group he had found had more extreme views that went in to religion, funding and terrorism.”

He added that there had not been any complaints to the store or the police by members of the Muslim community.

Edwards told the bench: “I’m a big animal lover, be it for racial or other purposes I believe it is wrong to treat animals in that way.”

In passing sentence of a four-week curfew for the two offences to run between 9pm and 7am, chairman Mrs Vanessa Goldstone said it had not been “a run-of-the-mill case”.

He must also pay £100 prosecution costs, £60 surcharge and £16.50 compensation.

An extensive proof of life inquiry found no evidence Paige was alive and she never claimed a ‘significant’ inheritance sum left to her after her mother’s death.

Less than a fortnight before Paige went missing, Ewing contacted police to tell them that a ‘problem child’ had turned up on his doorstep having been thrown out by her father.

Prosecutors said he was effectively “testing the water” and that there had been “very little reaction” by officials.

Ewing was also found guilty by a jury at Preston Crown Court of perverting the course of justice by intimidating witnesses and providing false information to the police.

Robert Ewing sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering 15-year-old in Blackpool to stop her reporting their sexual contact to police

A man who murdered a 15-year-old girl to stop her reporting their sexual contact has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 33 years in prison.

Robert Ewing, 60, exploited Paige Chivers, a vulnerable teenager from Blackburn, Lancashire, for his sexual gratification and then decided to silence her when she threatened to go to the authorities.

A jury convicted him of murder earlier this month, but was not told that Ewing had previous convictions for child sex abuse.

Ewing served a 12-month prison sentence in 1995 for gross indecency with a 13-year-old girl, whom he also indecently assaulted.

Justice Jeremy Baker, sentencing Ewing at Preston crown court, told him he had carried out a “carefully planned and executed murder” to avoid the prospect of returning to jail.

The body of the teenager has still not been found, nearly eight years after she went missing.

Mr Justice Baker said Paige’s life was “in turmoil” in the summer of 2007 after her mother had died in February that year and her late father’s addiction to alcohol had worsened to the extent that he largely abandoned her.

He said she was “sexually promiscuous” and an “easy target”, which was recognised by Ewing, whose flat near her home in Bispham became “something of a magnet” for young girls as he allowed them to smoke, drink alcohol and take drugs.

The judge said: “There came a point when Paige Chivers realised that she could manipulate the situation to her advantage and threatened to report you to the authorities … the last thing you wanted to occur was for the public authorities to be acquainted with what you had been doing.”

Less than a fortnight before Paige went missing, Ewing contacted police to tell them that a “problem child” had turned up on his doorstep, having been thrown out by her father.

Prosecutors said he was effectively “testing the water” and there had been “very little reaction” by officials.

The judge, who labelled the defendant intelligent and devious, said he also wanted to create an “innocent cover story”. He told the court that the precise circumstances of Paige’s death may never be known in the absence of any explanation from Ewing, but noted that Ewing had been heard in a covert police recording saying: “You don’t mess with me. Quick hammer over the fucking head, then they will be sorry.”

Only three tiny spots of blood belonging to Paige were found by police in inner hallway of his flat in All Hallows Road, after a meticulous clean-up by the defendant.

The judge said Dewhurst had been a “willing, if not enthusiastic, participant”. Dewhurst, of Duncan Avenue, Blackpool, was jailed for seven years for assisting an offender and an additional year for intending to pervert the course of justice by intimidating witnesses.

Ewing, of Kincraig Place, Blackpool, was also convicted of perverting the course of justice by intimidating witnesses and providing false information to the police.
Both men denied all the offences.

The teenager was described as “a fun-loving kid, bright and funny” in a victim impact statement from sister Madison Gordon, which was read out in court.

She said: “Paige was only a kid when her mum (Sheila) passed away in 2007. I would say it broke us. I think it hit Paige hard because of her age.
“Every birthday is a reminder that Paige is no longer with us to open her cards and to celebrate with her.”

She thought Paige would have gone on to study hair and beauty and would have been “a brilliant mum”. She added: “Not a day goes by that we don’t think about her. It should not have happened to my bonny outgoing sister. We all have big holes in our hearts that can no longer be replaced.”

Police say they remain committed to finding Paige’s body.

A thug who threw a bin and traffic cone at a Doncaster takeaway delivery driver’s car before he and two others set upon him in a ‘horrific attack’ has been jailed.

Kane Moffatt, aged 22, kicked the Mexborough man repeatedly in the horror assault, which he carried out alongside 20-year-old Philip Temperton and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The violent trio admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Sheffield Crown Court. Temperton was also jailed.

Just after midnight on October 4 last year, the 17-year-old chased the delivery driver’s vehicle down Mexborough High Street until it pulled up outside a fast food outlet.

The driver went inside the shop, but when he came out the three men punched him to the floor before Moffatt and Temperton kicked him repeatedly.

Another man, who had been in the shop, came outside to try to help the victim, but Moffat and the 17-year-old then began to attack him too. He escaped and ran back into the shop.

Moffatt then threw several items at the victim’s car, including a traffic cone and a bin, before the 17-year-old punched the car window.

The three then fled the scene, leaving the ‘distressed’ man on the floor.

They were arrested in November 2014 and entered not guilty pleas on their first court appearance in January.

But they changed their pleas to guilty and were sentenced on Friday.

Moffatt and the 17-year-old had also admitted common assault.

Moffatt, of Hawthorne Crescent, Mexborough, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and Temperton, of Arnold Crescent, Mexborough, was jailed for ten months.

The 17-year-old Doncaster boy was given a 12-month youth rehabilitation order.

Investigating officer Det Con Della O’Horo said after the court hearing: “This was a horrific attack on a man, and his friend who tried to help, for no reason whatsoever.

“The actions of these three that night are absolutely deplorable.

“Fortunately, the two victims did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of this violent assault, however the delivery driver has been extremely distressed by the incident.

“I hope residents in Mexborough feel some form of reassurance that we will not tolerate any form of criminality or violence and will do all that we can to bring offenders in the town to justice.”

A volunteer soldier posted a comment on Facebook suggesting racist violent revenge should be taken on the day drummer Lee Rigby was murdered.

Mark Tonner wrote “Get the boys together we need to paint the town red with Muslim blood”.

He was arrested after a member of the public complained on the Lancashire Police website about what Tonner had written.

Tonner, 36, of Ashton Road, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to sending an offensive message.

He was bailed for pre-sentence reports and will be sentenced at a later date by Blackpool magistrates.

Andrea Fawcett, prosecuting, said after the murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich, Tonner posted the comment on Facebook on May 23.

Tonner wrote “Dean, you’re in charge of Blackpool now. Get the boys together we need to paint the town red with Muslim blood”.

When interviewed by police Tonner said he had been angry and drunk at the time. He did not know Dean personally but believed he was a member of The English Defence League (EDL).

Hugh Pond, defending, said his client had been a member of the Army Reserve, formerly known as the Territorial Army, for more than five years and served as a clerk in the Transport Regiment at Grantham.

Tonner had been drinking heavily and had been revolted by the television pictures of the blood covered men saying they had murdered drummer Rigby.

Tonner, who was said in a reference from his commanding officer to have an exemplary character in the Army, was not a member of the EDL or National Front.

He was thoroughly ashamed of what he had done and was under investigation by the Army Reserve.

A NORTH West Infidel protestor was caught on tape shouting racist abuse in Blackburn.

Clare Louise Arrowsmith, 38, of Bothley Road, in Blackpool, had travelled to the town to take part in the far right rally.

She pleaded guilty to religiously aggravated threatening behaviour and was given a conditional discharge for 18 months.

She was also told to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Arrowsmith had travelled by train to take part in the town centre demo.

“She told police she was demonstrating against Islam because they were ‘grooming and murdering our children’,” Ms Allan said.

“She went on to express some extremist views about Muslims.”

Gary McAnulty, defending, said his client previously attended English Defence League demonstrations. He said there was no one else present except for the police.

He said: “This was the first time she had attended anything organised by the North West Infidels.

“They are a splinter group and very right wing compared to the EDL. It would appear there was no one there except the police.

“She was filmed making the comments and then went home.”

Wayne Riley outside Bolton magistrates court

A PROTESTER has been fined after parking outside polling stations on General Election day with a ‘Labour paedo party’ sign on his van.

Police were called to Horwich Library in Jones Street on May 7 after the white van had been spotted there, Bolton Magistrates Court heard.

Officers traced the van to Wayne Riley and found it on the street outside his Singleton Avenue home — still with two signs stuck to the side.

Riley swore and became abusive to officers, who quizzed him about the signs, the other of which read ‘please do not vote Labour’.

He was arrested after police made repeated efforts to reason with him, the court was told.

Riley appeared in court yesterday representing himself, but was removed by security staff at the request of chair of the bench Roz Clarke, after repeatedly shouting down magistrates and court staff.

He left the court building and security staff were instructed not to let him back in. The case was then heard in his absence.

Giving evidence, Sgt Alex Metcalfe said: “I could see straight away that he was angry and belligerent.

“He was swearing and he was aggressive. Children of school age were playing out and they were within hearing distance of what he was saying.

“His behaviour, coupled with the signs he had put on his van, and the fact we had already been called to one incident meant I was alarmed at how he was behaving.

“There were children playing out and mums walking past his can. There was no option but to arrest him.”

PC Alison Casey said in her evidence that Riley eventually turned his abuse to her, saying “the police never do anything about child abuse”.

The court heard she might not have taken any action had Riley calmed down and removed the signs from the van — which was parked on the street in full public view — but he refused to do so.

Riley was found guilty of a public order offence of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

He must pay a court bill of £1,255, comprising a £350 fine, £350 in costs, £520 criminal courts charge and a £35 victim surcharge.

On the day of the election, Labour councillor for Horwich Kevin McKeon said: “I feel sorry for a person whose bitterness can compel them to do something like this.

“I don’t think this will have any effect on voters today.

“I am of course disappointed that someone has done this but I am very pleased that the police have taken swift and correct action on the matter.”

Labour MP Julie Hilling went on to lose her Bolton West seat to the Conservatives’ Chris Green by just 801 votes.

Simon Badham received a three-year football banning order.

A SOUTH Tyneside football yob described as a “genuinely decent member of society” has been slapped with a banning order after a violent clash between rival fans.

Simon Badham avoided jail after admitting violent disorder following a mass street brawl between Sunderland and West Ham supporters.

The 21-year-old, from Frobisher Street, Hebburn, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 250 hours’ unpaid work. He was also given a three-year banning order.

Badham was one of four men to appear at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday to be sentenced over the violence, which erupted outside Revolution bar in Sunderland on January 12.

Judge Jeremy Freedman said Badham is usually a “genuinely decent member of society”.

Also sentenced was Kevin Bilton, 51, of Lambton Drive, Hetton, who admitted violent disorder and was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 100 hours of unpaid work.

Sean Herron, 19, of Hogarth Drive, Columbia, Washington, who handed in a stash of testimonials to his usually positive character, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 250 hours of unpaid work.

Shaun Baker, 29, of Gainsborough Square, Sunderland, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years with £500 costs.

All pleaded guilty to violent disorder and were given three-year football banning orders.

Judge Freedman said he accepted the men were ashamed of what they had done, and accepted none of them had been involved in the organising of the brawl by the Sunderland Youth Firm and rival supporters.

A FINE of £95 has been handed to a man who admitted assault and using threatening or abusive behaviour.

Adam Handley, aged 27, of Wilton Street, Bolton, committed the offences on May 25.

Bolton magistrates also ordered him to pay £50 compensation, a £150 criminal courts charge and £85 prosecution costs.

A Sittingbourne man who was beaten with a plank by two Asian men was himself hauled before the courts for racially aggravated assault.

Darren White posted footage on his Twitter account of the pair attacking him with a wooden plank as he fled through the town’s high street.

The 32-year-old then tweeted the former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson, alerting him to the case.

“I got beat with wood and pole and I may be going prison for racial aggravated behaviour,” he posted.

The video shows White being chased past the New Century Cinema before being struck four times with the plank as he entered the high street.

White, of Doubleday Drive, Bapchild, went on to tweet “got court today as I said arrest the ****ing Muslims so up for section 5 (sic)”.

Tommy Robinson responded to the post, saying: “It’s a joke, that Muslim that hit you with the wood, has he been arrested?”

He was ordered to pay £1,925 in fines for assaulting the policemen and another £300 for having the drug.

However, White was found not guilty of racially aggravated behaviour.

The Asian men shown in the video initially denied any wrongdoing.

But Muhammad Ahad, 24, of Kingston Road, Epsom, and Sarwar Hussain, 25, of Palmerston Road, Chatham, changed their pleas to guilty in court and will be sentenced later this month.
